Vinyl Chloride Monomer (VCM)

Vinyl Chloride

“The essential C2 monomer for PVC: the pressurized gas that builds pipes, cables, and a world of durable products.” Arnico’s Vinyl Chloride Monomer (VCM) is the high-purity, pressurized gas that is the exclusive, irreplaceable precursor to polyvinyl chloride (PVC). As the third most-used plastic on the planet, the PVC made from our VCM provides the durable pipes that bring clean water to cities, the safe insulation for electrical cables, and the long-lasting profiles for windows and doors. Our polymerization-grade VCM, with its ultra-low acetylene content, is engineered for maximum reactor efficiency and a flawless final polymer.
Description More

1. Product Introduction & Main Application

Arnico’s Vinyl Chloride Monomer (VCM) is a colorless gas with a sweet, ethereal odor, which is liquefied under pressure and produced by the thermal cracking of Ethylene Dichloride (EDC). This exclusive chemical intermediate is the primary and irreplaceable monomer for the production of Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC), which, after polyethylene and polypropylene, is the third most-used plastic in the world.

3. Features & Benefits

  • Exceptional Polymer Purity: Acetylene, a deadly poison for the radical polymerization of PVC that reduces molecular weight and thermal stability, is at a near-zero level.

  • Controlled Polymerization Reaction: Enables the production of PVC granulate with precisely controlled porosity, molecular weight, and particle size distribution.

  • A Versatile Plastic Raw Material: Conversion into products ranging from rigid underground pipes to soft flooring and flexible cables.

  • Stability in Storage: The addition of an inhibitor prevents spontaneous polymerization.

4. Industrial Applications

  • PVC Production: > 98% of the world’s VCM is used to produce polyvinyl chloride via suspension, emulsion, and mass polymerization methods.

  • Copolymer Production: Vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymers for floor coatings.

  • Chlorinated Solvents: A raw material for the synthesis of trichloroethylene and perchloroethylene.

5. Safety & Handling

  • MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet): This gas is extremely flammable, explosive, and a confirmed human carcinogen (IARC Group 1). The Arnico MSDS is vital for safe handling.

  • Storage Conditions: Store in pressurized and refrigerated spherical tanks, in an environment completely away from oxygen, sparks, and heat.

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Level A full personal protective equipment, an SCBA respirator, and continuous environmental monitoring are required.

6. Quality Assurance & COA

Arnico VCM shipments are accompanied by a Certificate of Analysis (COA) with a precise GC analysis for purity and acetylene content.

Technical documents for the product Vinyl Chloride including the Technical Data Sheet (TDS), Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), and Certificate of Analysis (COA), are available to customers upon request.
