Solvent 404 (Slow-Evaporating Aliphatic)

Solvent 404

“The slow-dry specialist for a flawless surface; more than a thinner, it’s an anti-blush technology.”Arnico Solvent 404 is engineered for the finishing line. As a heavier, slower-evaporating aliphatic hydrocarbon, it gives coatings the time they need to breathe, flow, and crosslink into a flawless, high-gloss finish without trapping moisture. From spray-applied furniture lacquers to moisture-curing polyurethanes, Solvent 404 eliminates the blushing defect, leaving behind nothing but a perfect mirror finish.
Description More

Product Introduction & Main Application

Arnico Solvent 404 is a dearomatized, high-boiling aliphatic solvent with a typical evaporation range between 205°C and 240°C. It is designed as a tail solvent for industrial coatings where a slow drying time is critical to avoid blushing (moisture condensation) and ensure smooth film leveling. Its high compatibility and mild odor make it ideal for indoor industrial applications like wood finishing and ink manufacturing.

3. Features & Benefits

  • Anti-Blushing Performance: Its extremely slow evaporation prevents evaporative cooling, which can cause atmospheric moisture to condense on the wet film, a critical problem in high-humidity environments.

  • Superior Flow & Leveling: Keeps the paint film open long enough to allow for complete brush mark and orange peel leveling, resulting in a glass-smooth surface.

  • Wide Safety Margin: A high flash point (>70°C) provides a significant safety advantage in heated industrial processes and for storage.

  • Non-Aggressive Thinner: Does not attack sensitive plastic substrates like ABS or polystyrene, making it ideal for coatings on consumer electronics.

4. Industrial Applications

  • Wood Finishing: A tail solvent in nitrocellulose (NC) lacquers and acid-curing varnishes.

  • Printing Inks: A diluent for sheet-fed offset inks to prevent premature drying and skinning on the press rollers.

  • Aerosol Paints: Used to adjust the internal pressure and control the dry spray characteristics of the paint.

  • Silicone Sealants: A compatible, odorless solvent for formulating one-component, oxime-cure silicone sealants.

5. Safety & Handling

  • MSDS: This product is a combustible liquid. Full MSDS is available from Arnico support.

  • Storage Conditions: Store in closed containers in a well-ventilated environment. Avoid prolonged breathing of mist or heated vapors.

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Standard PPE for chemical handling applies: nitrile gloves and safety goggles.

6. Quality Assurance & COA

Arnico supplies Solvent 404 with a COA confirming the full distillation curve and flash point, giving formulators the data needed to manage VOC content and drying profile.

Technical documents for the product Solvent 404 including the Technical Data Sheet (TDS), Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), and Certificate of Analysis (COA), are available to customers upon request.
