Propylene (Polymer & Chemical Grade)

Propylene

“The C3 building block: the essential olefin that creates plastics, solvents, and the materials of modern life.” Arnico’s high-purity Propylene is the second most important olefin in the global petrochemical industry, a fundamental link between the refinery and the consumer. As the essential monomer for polypropylene (PP), it forms the durable plastics in car bumpers, food packaging, and medical devices. Beyond polymers, it is the critical feedstock for propylene oxide, acrylonitrile, and a host of industrial chemicals. Our polymer-grade propylene is the versatile, reliable C3 foundation for a vast and essential product tree.
Description More

1. Product Introduction & Main Application

Arnico’s Propylene is a colorless, flammable gas with a faint petroleum odor, and as the world’s second-highest volume olefin after ethylene, it is a strategic raw material in the petrochemical industry. Obtained from naphtha cracking and refinery FCC units, this substance is the primary monomer for producing Polypropylene (PP) and the raw material for propylene oxide, acrylonitrile, the phenol/acetone chain, and isopropyl alcohol.

2. Technical Specifications

Technical Parameter Polymer Grade Chemical Grade Unit
Purity (Propylene) ≥ 99.5 ≥ 96.0 %
Propane ≤ 0.5 ≤ 4.0 %
Ethylene ≤ 10 ≤ 50 ppm
Methyl Acetylene & Propadiene (MAPD) ≤ 5 ≤ 20 ppm
Total Sulfur ≤ 1 ≤ 5 ppm
Water ≤ 5 ≤ 20 ppm
Liquid Density (at Boiling Point) ≈ 0.61 ≈ 0.61 kg/L

3. Features & Benefits

  • Guaranteed Polymer Purity: The Polymer Grade features minimal propane, which acts as a chain-transfer agent that reduces molecular weight, and MAPD, which is a catalyst poison.

  • A Versatile Monomer: Enables the production of polymers with controlled tacticity (isotactic, syndiotactic), which determines the final properties.

  • Multiple Reactivity: The ability to undergo oxidation to propylene oxide, ammoxidation to acrylonitrile, and hydrolysis to isopropanol.

  • High Calorific Value: The capacity for use as a gaseous fuel in crackers and energy-intensive processes.

4. Industrial Applications

  • Polypropylene (PP) Production: Automotive parts, BOPP packaging, carpet and rug fibers, and medical devices.

  • Propylene Oxide Production: For the manufacture of polyurethanes and propylene glycol.

  • Acrylonitrile Production: For acrylic fibers, ABS, and carbon fiber.

  • Phenol & Acetone Production: The cumene co-oxidation route.

5. Safety & Handling

  • MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet): This gas is extremely flammable and explosive. It is heavier than air and accumulates in low-lying areas. Inhalation causes unconsciousness. The Arnico MSDS is vital.

  • Storage Conditions: Store in high-pressure spherical tanks or cold cryogenic tanks, in open environments, away from sparks and heat.

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): The use of anti-static clothing, anti-spark shoes and tools, and monitoring and fire suppression systems is required.

6. Quality Assurance & COA

Arnico Propylene shipments are accompanied by a Certificate of Analysis (COA) with a precise GC analysis, including MAPD content.

Technical documents for the product Propylene including the Technical Data Sheet (TDS), Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), and Certificate of Analysis (COA), are available to customers upon request.
