Phosphoric Acid (H₃PO₄)

Phosphoric Acid

“From crop nutrition to cola fizz: the essential acid for food, farming, and metal protection.” Arnico’s high-purity Phosphoric Acid is a versatile workhorse across diverse industries. In its food-grade form, it delivers the tangy taste in carbonated beverages, while its industrial grades provide essential phosphate for fertilizers and a protective coating for metals. It’s the multi-faceted acid where purity, safety, and performance are paramount.
Description More

1. Product Introduction & Main Application

Arnico’s Phosphoric Acid is a high-purity, clear, odorless liquid mineral acid, supplied in both industrial and food-grade forms. As the primary source of phosphate ions, it plays a crucial role in the production of chemical fertilizers, acts as an acidulant in carbonated soft drinks, and serves as a metal corrosion protector in the metallurgy industry.

2. Technical Specifications

Technical Parameter Industrial Grade Food Grade Unit
Concentration (as H₃PO₄) ≥ 85.0 ≥ 85.0 %
Arsenic (As) ≤ 5 ≤ 0.5 ppm
Heavy Metals (as Pb) ≤ 10 ≤ 5 ppm
Iron (Fe) ≤ 20 ≤ 10 ppm
Sulfate (SO₄) ≤ 300 ≤ 100 ppm
Chloride (Cl) ≤ 20 ≤ 10 ppm

3. Features & Benefits

  • Guaranteed Food-Grade Purity: Fully compliant with FCC and WHO standards for use in edible and potable products.

  • Unparalleled Phosphate Solubility: Forms soluble complexes with calcium and iron, preventing scale formation in irrigation systems and food processing.

  • Mild & Controlled Acidity: Possesses sufficient acid strength for industrial applications without the extraordinarily aggressive corrosivity of halogenated acids.

  • Metal Corrosion Inhibition: The ability to create a protective phosphate layer (phosphatization) on iron and steel surfaces.

4. Industrial Applications

  • Food & Beverage Industry: The acidulant (E338) in cola beverages, dairy products, and edible oils.

  • Agriculture & Fertilizer: The primary raw material for producing solid phosphate fertilizers (DAP/MAP) and liquid fertilizers.

  • Metallurgy & Metal Finishing: Phosphating car bodies and home appliances, and cleaning metal surfaces.

  • Pharmaceutical & Dental Industry: A component in dental cements and a buffering agent in pharmaceutical solutions.

5. Safety & Handling

  • MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet): Concentrated phosphoric acid is corrosive and causes severe skin and eye burns. Its vapors are irritating at high temperatures. Complete information is available in the Arnico MSDS.

  • Storage Conditions: Store in 316L stainless steel or heavy-duty polyethylene tanks, above +21°C (to prevent crystallization), and away from alkalis and reactive metals.

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): The use of a face shield, chemical goggles, butyl or neoprene rubber gloves, and acid-resistant clothing is essential when handling the product.

6. Quality Assurance & COA

Arnico provides its Phosphoric Acid with a Certificate of Analysis (COA) and a guarantee of compliance with national and international standards for the food grade, including a full heavy metal analysis.

Technical documents for the product Phosphoric Acid including the Technical Data Sheet (TDS), Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), and Certificate of Analysis (COA), are available to customers upon request.
