Pentaerythritol (Mono-PE & Nitration Grade)

Pentaerythritol

“The four-armed polyol: the molecular core of high-performance resins, lubricants, and energetic materials.” Arnico’s Pentaerythritol is the unique, tetrafunctional polyol that forms the dense, cross-linked heart of premium alkyd resins and synthetic lubricants. Its four reactive hydroxyl arms create coatings of exceptional hardness and gloss, and its high thermal stability makes it the backbone of jet engine lubricants. This is a molecule designed for extremes—where a superior finish, high-temperature performance, and controlled reactivity are the measures of success.
Description More

1. Product Introduction & Main Application

Arnico’s Pentaerythritol is a white, crystalline polyol with four reactive hydroxyl groups, produced from the reaction of formaldehyde with acetaldehyde in an alkaline medium. Due to its unique, multi-functional structure, this substance is the primary raw material for producing high-quality alkyd resins for baking enamels and automotive paints, synthetic lubricants for jet engines, and the powerful explosive PETN.

2. Technical Specifications

3. Features & Benefits

  • Four Reactive Hydroxyl Groups: Creates a very dense and resistant polymer network in alkyd resins, dramatically increasing coating hardness, gloss, and chemical resistance.

  • Exceptional Thermal & Oxidation Stability (Mono-PE): Suitable for producing polyol ester (POE) base stocks used as high-temperature synthetic lubricants for jet turbines.

  • Exceptional Purity (Nitration Grade): Free from di-pentaerythritol and organic impurities, which is critical for the safe and controlled production of PETN with standard explosive sensitivity and power.

  • Water-Borne Reactivity: Combines well with long-chain fatty acids to produce fast-drying resins.

4. Industrial Applications

  • Paint & Coatings Industry: High-solids alkyd resins for automotive and appliance paints.

  • Lubricant Industry: Ester base stocks for jet engine and compressor oils.

  • Military & Mining Industry: The raw material for PETN in detonators and detonating cord.

  • PVC Stabilizers: An additive that prevents thermal degradation in rigid PVC.

5. Safety & Handling

  • MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet): This material’s dust is a mild eye and respiratory tract irritant. It is non-flammable. The Arnico MSDS file is available.

  • Storage Conditions: Store in multi-layer bags in a dry, cool, and well-ventilated place, away from strong oxidizers and acids (for nitration consumption).

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): When decanting, the use of a P2 dust mask and safety goggles is recommended.

6. Quality Assurance & COA

Arnico Pentaerythritol shipments are accompanied by a Certificate of Analysis (COA) detailing the purity percentage, melting point, and di-pentaerythritol content.

Technical documents for the product Pentaerythritol including the Technical Data Sheet (TDS), Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), and Certificate of Analysis (COA), are available to customers upon request.
