Petroleum Coke (Fuel Grade / Anode Grade)

Petroleum Coke (Pet Coke)

“The solid fuel of the industrial inferno; more than carbon, it’s the dense, enduring energy for melting the world.”Arnico supplies Petroleum Coke (Pet Coke) with the high fixed carbon and low volatile matter required for intense, sustained thermal processes. Our fuel-grade pet coke provides an economic, high-BTU alternative to coal for cement kilns and power boilers, while our anode-grade coke serves as the backbone of the aluminum smelting industry. For high-temperature, high-energy demands, trust the black diamond of refining from Arnico.
Description More

 Product Introduction & Main Application

Arnico’s Petroleum Coke (Pet Coke) is a hard, solid carbon material produced from the thermal cracking of heavy residual oil (Vacuum Bottom) in a Delayed Coker Unit. It is a black, porous solid with a high carbon-to-hydrogen ratio. It is classified primarily into Fuel Grade, which is used as a high-calorific-value fuel in cement kilns and power plants, and Anode Grade, which undergoes calcination to produce high-purity carbon anodes essential for the aluminum electrolysis process.

3. Features & Benefits

  • High Calorific Value: Fuel Grade Pet Coke delivers 7,800-8,200 kcal/kg, providing more energy per ton than most steam coals, reducing overall logistics costs.

  • Low Ash Content: The minimal ash residue (<0.5%) compared to coal simplifies ash handling and disposal and reduces refractory erosion in kilns.

  • Ideal Smelting Anode Feed: The low-sulfur, low-metals grade is specifically destined for calcination and subsequent anode production, where it provides high electrical conductivity.

  • Sulfur Value Recovery: The high sulfur in fuel grade is beneficial in cement manufacturing, where it is absorbed by limestone, reducing the need for added gypsum.

  • Versatile Physical Forms: Can be supplied as shot, sponge, or needle coke depending on the source and intended downstream process.

4. Industrial Applications

  • Cement Industry: The primary fuel for pre-calciner and rotary kilns due to its high energy, low ash, and mineral-trapping properties.

  • Aluminum Smelting: The essential raw material for manufacturing pre-baked carbon anodes after calcination.

  • Titanium Dioxide Production: A feedstock in the chloride process for TiO₂ pigment manufacturing.

  • Steel Making: A recarburizer additive to adjust carbon levels in molten steel and as an injection fuel for Electric Arc Furnaces (EAF).

5. Safety & Handling

  • MSDS: This product is a combustible, dusty solid with a risk of self-heating in bulk storage. Full MSDS is provided by Arnico.

  • Storage Conditions: Store in open or covered bunkers. Monitor internal pile temperatures. Use low-speed conveyors and controlled drop heights to minimize dust generation.

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Petroleum coke dust is classified as a nuisance dust. Use of a NIOSH-approved N95 dust mask, safety glasses, and full-body clothing is mandatory.

6. Quality Assurance & COA

Every shipment of Pet Coke from Arnico is accompanied by a detailed Certificate of Analysis (COA) from an independent surveyor, specifying fixed carbon, sulfur, and trace metals (V, Ni, Fe), ensuring the product meets the precise anode or fuel specification.

Technical documents for the product Petroleum Coke (Pet Coke) including the Technical Data Sheet (TDS), Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), and Certificate of Analysis (COA), are available to customers upon request.
