Rubber Process Oil (RPO / Extender Oil)

Rubber Process Oil (RPO)

“The softener that defines the road; more than a process aid, it’s the elastic core of mobility.”In the violent ballet of a mixing mill, Arnico’s Rubber Process Oil is the choreographer. Our RPOs, ranging from aromatic to paraffinic, perfectly intercalate between carbon black and polymer chains, transforming a tough, intractable rubber bale into a smooth, formable compound. For tire treads that grip the road and sidewalls that withstand endless flexing, trust Arnico to deliver the perfect balance of processability and dynamic performance.
Description More

Product Introduction & Main Application

Arnico’s Rubber Process Oil (RPO) is a range of mineral oils used as extender oils and plasticizers in the rubber and tire industries. These oils, classified as Aromatic (DAE/TDAE), Naphthenic, or Paraffinic, are critical compounding ingredients that soften the rubber, improve the dispersion of carbon black and silica fillers, and enhance the physical properties of the vulcanized product. The choice of RPO type determines the final product’s compatibility, low-temperature flexibility, and dynamic hysteresis.

3. Features & Benefits

  • Non-Carcinogenic & Compliant: Our primary aromatic grade is TDAE (Treated Distillate Aromatic Extract), containing less than 3% PCA per EU REACH regulations, making it safe for workers and the environment.

  • Optimal Polymer Compatibility: Naphthenic oils offer a balanced solubility, making them a universal choice for natural rubber (NR), SBR, and EPDM.

  • Excellent Low-Temperature Properties: Paraffinic grades provide a high viscosity index and an extremely low pour point, vital for Arctic-grade rubber goods.

  • Improved Filler Incorporation: The wetting action of RPO drastically reduces mix time and energy consumption while maximizing the reinforcement effect of carbon black.

  • Enhanced Dynamic Performance: TDAE grades lower the heat build-up (hysteresis) in tire treads, directly contributing to lower rolling resistance and better fuel economy.

4. Industrial Applications

  • Tire Manufacturing: A softener and extender in passenger car radial (PCR) and truck bus radial (TBR) tread, sidewall, and inner liner compounds.

  • Automotive Rubber Parts: Engine mounts, hoses, seals, and grommets requiring high fatigue resistance.

  • Industrial Rubber Goods: Conveyor belts, transmission belts, and industrial hoses.

  • Reclaimed Rubber: A reclaiming agent for devulcanizing scrap tire crumb.

5. Safety & Handling

  • MSDS: This product is a high-boiling point liquid. Full MSDS is available from Arnico.

  • Storage Conditions: Store in sealed tanks at 60-80°C to maintain pumpability. Avoid moisture contamination, which causes foaming during mixing.

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Repeated skin contact may cause irritation. Use of oil-resistant gloves and safety goggles is recommended.

6. Quality Assurance & COA

All Arnico RPO is supplied with a COA detailing viscosity, specific gravity, carbon-type analysis, and the crucial PCA content, guaranteeing it meets the most stringent global tire industry health and safety standards.
