Methylene Diphenyl Diisocyanate (MDI - Polymeric & Pure Grades)Methylene Diphenyl Diisocyanate (MDI - Polymeric & Pure Grades)

MDI

“The powerful NCO core of rigid foams and tough elastomers: the isocyanate that insulates and protects.” Arnico’s Methylene Diphenyl Diisocyanate (MDI) is the high-functionality isocyanate that forms the rigid, insulating heart of modern construction and the tough, durable skin of industrial coatings. As a polymeric grade (PMDI), it creates the world’s most effective thermal insulation in refrigerators and buildings. As a pure monomer, it produces the transparent, abrasion-resistant elastomers and sealants that protect our infrastructure. It is the essential, high-performance bond that builds an energy-efficient and durable world.
Description More

1. Product Introduction & Main Application

Arnico’s Methylene Diphenyl Diisocyanate (MDI) is an aromatic compound with two highly reactive isocyanate groups, supplied as a light brown liquid. This substance is the primary and irreplaceable isocyanate component in the production of rigid polyurethane foams for building and refrigerator insulation, high-resistance elastomers, engineering adhesives, and industrial coatings with exceptional abrasion and chemical resistance.

3. Features & Benefits

  • Fast & Complete Reactivity (PMDI): Creates a rigid, closed-cell foam with the highest thermal insulation performance (the lowest Lambda value) in the industry.

  • Unmatched Adhesion & Strength: Powerful chemical bonding to wood, metal, and concrete surfaces, making it an ideal binder for OSB boards.

  • Exceptional Monomeric Purity (Pure MDI): Enables the production of thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU) and cast elastomers with high clarity and precise mechanical properties.

  • Thermal & Chemical Resistance: Stability against oils, solvents, and high temperatures.

4. Industrial Applications

  • Insulation: Rigid polyurethane foam (PUR/PIR) for refrigerators, cold storage, and building sandwich panels.

  • Wood Industry: A formaldehyde-free binder for OSB and MDF wood panels.

  • Automotive Industry: Dashboards, steering wheels, and interior and exterior parts (RIM).

  • Coatings & Elastomers: Industrial flooring, printing rollers, and skate wheels.

5. Safety & Handling

  • MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet): This is a severe respiratory and skin irritant and a sensitizer (occupational asthma). The Arnico MSDS is vital for safe handling.

  • Storage Conditions: Store in dry tanks under a nitrogen blanket, at a temperature of 25-30°C (PMDI) and 43-45°C (Pure MDI), and away from moisture and alkalis.

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): A full-face respirator with an A2P3 filter, solvent-resistant clothing, and Viton gloves are mandatory.

6. Quality Assurance & COA

Arnico MDI shipments are accompanied by a Certificate of Analysis (COA) detailing the NCO content, viscosity, and isomer purity.

Technical documents for the product MDI including the Technical Data Sheet (TDS), Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), and Certificate of Analysis (COA), are available to customers upon request.
