Sodium Formate (Technical & Leather Grades)

Sodium Formate

“The gentle reducing agent: the versatile salt for de-icing runways, tanning leather, and accelerating concrete.” Arnico’s Sodium Formate is the high-purity, multi-functional organic salt that provides a safer, more effective alternative to traditional industrial chemicals. As a powerful de-icer, it protects critical airport infrastructure without the corrosive damage of chloride salts. As a tanning agent, it delivers high-quality, supple leather, and as a concrete additive, it accelerates setting in cold weather. For industries seeking a biodegradable, high-performance solution, our sodium formate is the intelligent choice.
Description More

1. Product Introduction & Main Application

Arnico’s Sodium Formate is a white, crystalline, hygroscopic organic salt, produced from the reaction of carbon monoxide with sodium hydroxide. This substance acts as an effective reducing agent and a source of formate ions, with diverse applications in leather tanning (as an acidifying and masking agent in the chrome process), as an airport runway de-icer, a cement-setting accelerator, and a raw material in the synthesis of formic acid and sodium hydrosulfite.

2. Technical Specifications

Technical Parameter Standard Technical Grade Leather Grade Unit
Purity ≥ 98.0 ≥ 96.0 %
Organic Matter (as HCOONa) ≥ 98.0 ≥ 96.0 %
Moisture ≤ 1.0 ≤ 1.5 %
Sodium Carbonate (Na₂CO₃) ≤ 1.5 ≤ 2.0 %
pH (10% Solution) 8.0 – 9.5 8.0 – 9.5
Iron (Fe) ≤ 20 ≤ 50 ppm
Chloride (Cl) ≤ 0.5 ≤ 1.0 %

3. Features & Benefits

  • Mild Reducing & Buffering Agent: Possesses a mild reducing power and ideal pH for sensitive processes like leather tanning and papermaking.

  • Concrete-Setting Accelerator: An effective anti-freeze that reduces the setting time of cement in cold weather.

  • A Safe & Transportable CO Source: In-situ generation of carbon monoxide and formic acid upon the addition of a stronger acid.

  • Environmentally Friendlier than Salt: Use as an airport runway de-icer causes significantly less corrosion than sodium chloride.

4. Industrial Applications

  • Leather Industry: An acidifier and masking agent in chrome and vegetable tanning.

  • Construction & Civil Engineering: A fast-setting and anti-freeze additive for concrete.

  • Oil & Gas Industry: A shale stabilizer and lubricant in drilling fluids.

  • Chemical Industry: The production of formic acid and sodium dithionite (hydrosulfite).

5. Safety & Handling

  • MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet): This material is a mild eye and skin irritant. On contact with strong acids, it releases CO gas (toxic). The Arnico MSDS file must be obtained.

  • Storage Conditions: Store in sealed, completely moisture-proof bags, in a dry, cool place, and away from acids and strong oxidizers. It is highly hygroscopic.

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): When decanting, the use of a dust mask and safety goggles is required.

6. Quality Assurance & COA

Arnico Sodium Formate shipments are accompanied by a Certificate of Analysis (COA) detailing the purity percentage and pH value.

Technical documents for the product Sodium Formate including the Technical Data Sheet (TDS), Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), and Certificate of Analysis (COA), are available to customers upon request.
