Maleic Anhydride (MA - Molten & Solid Grade)

Maleic Anhydride

“The highly reactive dienophile: the essential C4 intermediate for unsaturated polyesters and lubricant additives.” Arnico’s Maleic Anhydride (MA) is the powerful, versatile intermediate with a highly strained ring and a reactive double bond, making it a cornerstone of polymer and additive chemistry. It is the essential raw material for unsaturated polyester resins that build durable boats and pipes, and the key precursor for PIBSA, a crucial engine oil dispersant. Our high-purity briquettes and stable molten form deliver the consistent reactivity needed for demanding, high-performance chemical syntheses.
Description More

1. Product Introduction & Main Application

Arnico’s Maleic Anhydride is a solid chemical substance supplied in briquette or white powder form, produced from the catalytic oxidation of n-butane or benzene. This chemical intermediate, possessing a reactive double bond and a highly active anhydride ring, is a key raw material for the production of Unsaturated Polyester Resins (UPR), copolymers, lubricating oil additives, and maleic acid.

2. Technical Specifications

Technical Parameter Molten / Solid Grade High Purity Grade Unit
Purity ≥ 99.5 ≥ 99.9 %
Freezing Point 52.5 – 52.8 52.7 – 52.9 °C
Color (APHA, 140°C Melt) ≤ 20 ≤ 10 Pt-Co
Free Maleic Acid ≤ 0.1 ≤ 0.05 %
Ash ≤ 5 ≤ 2 ppm
Iron (Fe) ≤ 1 ≤ 0.5 ppm

3. Features & Benefits

  • Exceptional & Multiple Reactivity: The anhydride ring opens with alcohols, and the double bond participates in copolymerization with styrene, creating unmatched versatility in polymer synthesis.

  • Color Stability & Thermal Purity: The molten grade has minimal iron impurities, preventing discoloration of the final resin.

  • Chemical Resistance in UPR Resins: Imparts hardness and excellent anti-corrosion properties against water and chemicals.

  • Lubricant Raw Material: An anti-wear additive and viscosity index improver in engine oil (via the production of PIBSA).

4. Industrial Applications

  • Resin Production: Unsaturated polyester resins for boats, pipes, and FRP tanks.

  • Lubricant Industry: The production of polyisobutenyl succinic anhydride (PIBSA) for engine oil additives.

  • Agriculture & Food: The production of maleic acid, fumaric acid, and malic acid.

  • Paper Industry: Wet-strength paper resins (sizing agent).

5. Safety & Handling

  • MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet): This material’s dust and vapors are severe skin, eye, and lung irritants and cause chemical burns. The Arnico MSDS is mandatory.

  • Storage Conditions: Store the solid form in moisture-proof bags, and the molten form in heated tanks (60-70°C), away from water, alkalis, and oxidizers. It reacts violently with water.

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Acid-resistant clothing, PVC gloves, sealed goggles, and a P2 respirator for dust are required.

6. Quality Assurance & COA

Arnico Maleic Anhydride shipments are accompanied by a Certificate of Analysis (COA) detailing the freezing point and melt color.
