1,3-Butadiene (Polymer & Chemical Grade)

Butadiene

“The reactive diene: the essential monomer for synthetic rubber, ABS, and high-impact plastics.” Arnico’s 1,3-Butadiene is the highly reactive, conjugated diolefin that gives toughness and resilience to the world’s most important synthetic rubbers and plastics. Extracted from the crude C4 stream of a steam cracker, our high-purity butadiene is the crucial monomer for producing styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) for billions of car tires, and polybutadiene (PBR) for high-impact ABS plastics. It’s the molecular spring in the products that cushion, protect, and endure daily life.
Description More

1. Product Introduction & Main Application

Arnico’s 1,3-Butadiene is a colorless gas with a mild gasoline-like odor, liquefied under pressure, and is one of the most important monomers in the petrochemical industry, obtained from the steam cracking of naphtha and extracted from the C4 fraction. This diolefin, with two conjugated double bonds, is the irreplaceable raw material for the production of various synthetic rubbers (SBR, PBR), high-impact ABS plastic, and Nylon 66.

2. Technical Specifications

Technical Parameter Polymer Grade Chemical Grade Unit

Inhibitor (TBC) 50 – 150 (upon request) 50 – 150 ppm

3. Features & Benefits

  • Conjugated Diene Structure: Two conjugated double bonds allow for high-efficiency copolymerization reactions with styrene and acrylonitrile.

  • Guaranteed Polymer Purity: Free from acetylenes, which are deadly poisons for anionic and coordination polymerization catalysts, preserving the final rubber’s properties.

  • TBC Inhibitor Present: Prevents spontaneous and dangerous polymerization (popcorn polymer formation) during storage and transport.

  • ABS Raw Material: Creates the impact-resistant rubbery phase in ABS plastics used in home appliances and automobiles.

4. Industrial Applications

  • Tire Industry: The primary monomer in Styrene-Butadiene Rubber (SBR) and Polybutadiene Rubber (PBR) for tire treads and sidewalls.

  • High-Impact Plastics: The production of ABS (e.g., vacuum cleaner bodies, car dashboards) and ABS latex.

  • Nylon Production: The raw material in the synthesis route for adiponitrile and hexamethylene diamine for Nylon 66.

  • Specialty Rubbers: The production of Neoprene (Polychloroprene) and Nitrile Rubber (NBR).

5. Safety & Handling

  • MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet): This gas is extremely flammable, explosive, and carcinogenic. Its inhalation is hazardous. The Arnico MSDS is mandatory and vital.

  • Storage Conditions: Store exclusively in pressurized spherical tanks or refrigerated tanks, completely under an inert gas blanket and away from oxygen, heat, sparks, and direct light. The TBC inhibitor level must be checked regularly.

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): The use of anti-static and solvent-resistant clothing, anti-spark shoes, a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), and continuous monitoring systems is mandatory.

6. Quality Assurance & COA

Arnico Butadiene shipments are accompanied by a Certificate of Analysis (COA) with a precise GC analysis for purity and acetylenes.

Technical documents for the product Butadiene including the Technical Data Sheet (TDS), Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), and Certificate of Analysis (COA), are available to customers upon request.
