Dimethyl Disulfide (DMDS)

Dimethyl Disulfide

“The high-performance sulfiding agent: protecting your catalyst is protecting your profit.” Arnico’s ultra-high-purity Dimethyl Disulfide (DMDS) is the premier choice for catalyst pre-sulfiding in refineries worldwide. It ensures a rapid, complete, and controlled activation of hydrotreating catalysts, maximizing their activity and lifespan. Beyond refining, its purity and efficacy make it a trusted solution in agriculture and chemical synthesis, solidifying its place as a versatile, high-value industrial chemical.
Description More

1. Product Introduction & Main Application

Arnico’s Dimethyl Disulfide (DMDS) is an organic sulfur-containing liquid with a high purity and a characteristic pungent odor. It is widely used as a sulfiding agent (pre-sulfurization) for hydrotreating catalysts in refineries and as a soil fumigant and insecticide in agriculture. The exceptionally high purity of this product makes it a safe and efficient choice for activating metal catalysts.

3. Features & Benefits

  • High Sulfidation Efficiency: Enables a direct and controlled injection of sulfur to the catalyst, resulting in faster and more complete activation compared to gaseous methods.

  • Exceptional Purity: Free from heavy hydrocarbons and water, which prevents coke formation and catalyst poisoning.

  • High Boiling Point: Offers superior operational safety in high-temperature refinery processes compared to its predecessor, Dimethyl Sulfide (DMS).

  • Excellent Penetration Power: As a nematicide, its high vapor pressure allows easy diffusion through soil pores, effectively controlling a wide spectrum of pests.

4. Industrial Applications

  • Refineries & Petrochemicals: Pre-sulfiding activation of Hydrotreating (HDT) and Hydrocracking (HCU) catalysts for the production of low-sulfur fuels.

  • Agriculture: A highly effective soil fumigant against nematodes, soil-borne fungi, and weed seeds prior to planting high-value crops.

  • Chemical Industry: An intermediate in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and odorants for city gas.

  • Animal Feed: Used as a limited additive to supply organic sulfur (methionine) in dietary rations (requires confirmation of local guidelines).

5. Safety & Handling

  • MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet): This substance is highly flammable (Flash Point ≈ 24°C) and has a very strong, disagreeable odor. Before any contact, the MSDS file and spill management procedures must be thoroughly studied.

  • Storage Conditions: Store in carbon steel or stainless steel containers, sealed, away from sources of ignition, heat, and strong oxidizing agents, at a temperature below 25°C. Tanks must be blanketed with an inert gas (N₂).

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): When handling, the use of full anti-static workwear, a respirator with a specific organic/sulfur filter, chemical goggles, and Viton or neoprene gloves is mandatory.

6. Quality Assurance & COA

Arnico provides all DMDS shipments with a dedicated Certificate of Analysis (COA), including precise GC purity and moisture content. This guarantee helps refinery engineers accurately calculate the sulfidation injection rate, preventing damage to expensive catalyst beds.
