Description More
Sodium Hydroxide (Caustic Soda) ARNICO: The Indispensable Alkali for Industrial Excellence and Process Optimization
Sodium Hydroxide, universally known as Caustic Soda and chemically represented as NaOH, is one of the most fundamental and widely used chemical reagents in the world. Marketed under the trusted brand Caustic Soda ARNICO, this powerful alkali is the workhorse of countless industrial processes. It is not merely a chemical; it is a critical enabler for manufacturing, water treatment, and chemical synthesis. ARNICO’s Caustic Soda is produced through advanced membrane cell electrolysis technology, resulting in a product of exceptional purity, consistency, and clarity. This is a product that underpins the production of everything from the paper we read to the soap we use, the textiles we wear, and the clean water we drink. It is a cornerstone of the modern chemical industry, and ARNICO is committed to delivering it with the highest standards of quality and safety.
The true power of Caustic Soda lies in its extraordinary chemical reactivity as a strong base. It is highly soluble in water, generating considerable heat upon dissolution, and it reacts vigorously with acids, amphoteric metals, and various organic compounds. This versatility makes it an indispensable processing aid and reagent.
ARNICO supplies Sodium Hydroxide in two primary, specialized forms to cater to diverse industrial needs:
1. Caustic Soda Flakes/Pearls (Solid Grade): This form, characterized by white, hygroscopic flakes or spherical pearls, is a highly concentrated source of alkali (typically ≥ 98% NaOH). Its solid form is ideal for industries with precise dosing requirements, where the convenience of manual handling and smaller scale usage is preferred. It is the standard for laboratories, water treatment facilities, and many industrial chemical synthesis processes.
2. Caustic Soda Lye (Liquid Grade, ~50% w/w): This is a concentrated, clear, and viscous aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide, typically supplied at a concentration of 48-50% by weight. The liquid form is the preferred choice for large-scale industrial users due to its ease of handling, pumping, and automated metering into continuous processes. It is the workhorse for high-volume applications in the chemical, pulp & paper, and textile industries.
The decisive competitive advantage of ARNICO Caustic Soda lies in its unwavering purity and consistency. Manufactured using ion-exchange membrane technology, our product is virtually free of chlorides, chlorates, and heavy metal impurities that plague less-refined grades. This high purity is critical for sensitive applications such as pharmaceutical synthesis, food processing, and high-end chemical manufacturing, ensuring both process integrity and final product quality.

Expert Parameter Guide (For Informed and Professional Selection)
A true professional understands that the value of a chemical reagent lies in its purity and consistency. This guide will empower you to make the most informed technical and economic decisions:
Total Alkalinity (as NaOH): The Core of Power. This parameter is the most direct indicator of a product’s strength. For the solid grade, a minimum of 98.5% purity ensures maximum active ingredient content with minimal inert material. For the liquid grade, the 50% concentration is the industry benchmark, balancing high chemical activity with safe handling and manageable freezing points. Higher purity directly translates to more efficient reactions and less by-product formation.
Sodium Carbonate (Na₂CO₃): The Absorber of Carbon Dioxide. This is an impurity formed by the reaction of NaOH with atmospheric carbon dioxide. Its presence reduces the effective alkalinity and can interfere with certain chemical reactions. ARNICO’s strict control over this parameter ensures a more reactive and predictable product, especially critical in pH-sensitive processes.
Sodium Chloride (NaCl): The Corrosion Catalyst. This is a key contaminant, particularly problematic in high-temperature processes or where stainless steel equipment is used, as it significantly accelerates pitting and stress corrosion cracking. The exceptionally low chloride content guaranteed by ARNICO is a testament to its advanced membrane-cell manufacturing process and translates directly to longer equipment life and reduced maintenance costs.
Iron (Fe) and Heavy Metals: The Purity Index. These impurities can discolor final products and catalyze unwanted side reactions. For applications in pharmaceuticals, food processing, and high-value chemical synthesis, the ultra-low levels of metal impurities in ARNICO Caustic Soda are essential to ensure product quality and process integrity.

Comprehensive Safety, Handling, and Storage Guide
ARNICO Sodium Hydroxide is a highly corrosive substance, both in solid and liquid form. It causes severe chemical burns upon contact with skin or eyes and is highly reactive, particularly with water, acids, and certain metals. Strict adherence to safety protocols is non-negotiable.
Mandatory Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Before any handling or operation involving Caustic Soda, the use of the following protective layer is mandatory:
Gloves: Long-sleeved, heavy-duty, chemically resistant gloves made of neoprene, nitrile, or PVC.
Eye and Face Protection: Full-seal chemical safety goggles (Goggles) in conjunction with a full-face shield (Face Shield) to protect against splashes of this highly corrosive substance.
Body Protection: A full-length, acid/alkali-resistant apron or suit (e.g., made of PVC or rubber) and rubber boots.
Respiratory Protection: If there is potential for dust generation (solid form) or mist/aerosol (liquid form), use a respirator with appropriate cartridges for alkaline dust and mist.
Critical Safety Hazard: Chemical Burns and Exothermic Reaction.
Chemical Burns: This is the most significant hazard. Caustic Soda causes deep, penetrating burns that may not be immediately painful. Immediate and thorough flushing with water is critical.
Exothermic Reaction with Water: NEVER add water to Caustic Soda; ALWAYS add Caustic Soda slowly to water while stirring. This “Add the Chemical to Water” rule is essential to prevent a violent boiling reaction and splashing of the corrosive solution.
Emergency Procedures and First Aid Measures:
On Skin: Immediately remove all contaminated clothing. Flush the affected skin area continuously with copious amounts of cool, clean water for a minimum of 20-30 minutes. Seek immediate medical attention for any chemical burn.
In Eyes: This is an emergency. Immediately rinse the eyes thoroughly, holding the eyelids open, with a gentle but continuous stream of lukewarm water for at least 20-30 minutes. In all cases of eye contact, immediate and urgent transportation to a specialized ophthalmologist is mandatory.
Inhalation: Immediately move the affected person to fresh, open air. If coughing, chest tightness, or difficulty breathing persists, seek immediate medical attention.
Accidental Ingestion: Rinse the mouth thoroughly with plenty of water. Do NOT induce vomiting. If the person is fully conscious, give them small amounts of milk or water to drink. Call emergency medical services immediately.
Golden Rules for Optimal Storage and Handling:
Liquid Grade: Store in dedicated, ventilated, and contained areas. Tanks should be constructed of compatible materials such as stainless steel, polyethylene (HDPE), or fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP). Never use aluminum, tin, or zinc tanks. A secondary containment dike is essential. The freezing point of 50% lye is approximately 12°C, so storage tanks and lines may require heat tracing or insulation in cold climates.
Solid Grade: Caustic Soda flakes and pearls are highly hygroscopic (moisture-absorbing) and will absorb water and CO₂ from the air, leading to caking and loss of reactivity. Bags must be kept sealed and stored in a strictly dry, cool, and well-ventilated warehouse.
This product must be stored isolated from incompatible materials, including strong acids, flammable liquids, and reactive metals (like aluminum, zinc, and tin). Contact with acids generates significant heat.
Safety Data Sheet (SDS): The complete and official Safety Data Sheet, compliant with the Globally Harmonized System (GHS), including all 16 standard sections, is always available for download on the official ARNICO website. It is a legal and professional imperative that all employers and safety officers study this document thoroughly.
